What happened this week?
The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) - Acknowledgment
Grade 5/6 students undertook an education tour of the national capital, during their Canberra Camp. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $67.50 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
We always we connect our students’ learning to our curriculum and our community, so it is relevant and meaningful to them. In Art, this past week, students were asked to draw something related to those fallen, who we will remember on Remembrance Day, in a few days. Our school captains and other 5/6 students will be able to reflect again on their experience of The Last Post Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.
More ART
This past week, students created tree branches, blowing on the paint then adding dots and more details. The results are fantastic. Such a clever technique!
Don’t hesitate to come to the Art room to have a look at your child’s artwork, or even better.. pencil in to attend our first Exhibition of Learning taking place at the end of this term, on Thursday 11th December!
A snapshot around the school…
In Science, our Prep students noticed that the seeds they had planted has grown into grass.
Our grade 3/4 students had to predict which material would soak in water most, before observing the experiment they ran with a partner.
Our grade 1/2s made slime and observed what happened once you mix it all together. You have guessed the main learning scientific skills everyone is doing at the moment: Predict, observe and record results.
Grade 5/6 students have nearly finished their poster to promote their drink bottle.
More learning together…
In Physical Education (P.E.), Room 4 learnt to play competitive games with Rooms 5 and 6. Afterwards, the 5/6 students, who had planned lessons, took 3/4 students for their PE lessons. I think some comments made to teachers were “They don’t listen!” “I don’t think I can ever be a teacher!”, which made many of us laugh as you can imagine. But they did a great job with this task.
Special visitors at school
The Blue tongue lizards are out and about again on warmer days. Please remind your children to not go near them and leave them alone if they see them.
We also had a wonderful experience when two eggs hatched in front of our eyes and two little ducklings joined slowly their brothers and sisters, who had hatched only hours prior. All students were in awe this week, as they came to the library for their lessons.
Grade 6 students
Our grade 6 students have made their letters, ready to be signed as memorabilia from their time at Heyfield Primary School. They had to sand them before painting them.
Grade 2 excursion and sleepover
Students started their day with the Glenmaggie Weir Wall, before heading off to Wollangarra. They finished their day with pizzas for dinner and then slept in the library.
Thank you to John Krohn, Hayley Taylor and Sean Patmore from Southern Rural Water for coordinating the tour this year again. Thank you to all staff at Wollangarra Outdoor Education Centre for running the activities there.
Everyone had a great time again this year. Thank you to all staff at school who were involved in organising and supporting with this special day: Tiffany Sweet, Emily Johnstone, Lacey Radford, Natasha Howlett and Rhonda Stuart.
